The management of pain today is greatly different than it was even a few years ago. Advancement in drugs and delivery systems are making great improvements in how pain is treated.
Our ability to compound pain management products is helping doctors treat their patients more effectively. We can now compound products into unique combinations, unique doses, or different delivery systems. Being able to get their pain medication in a form custom made for them enables more patients to live pain-free lives.
The use of transdermal gels has been an area where much growth has taken place. By using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in a gel form you are able to rub the gel directly into the affected area and avoid much of the gastrointestinal side effects. The same is true for topically applied muscle relaxants. Relief of the muscle spasm is obtained without the sedation the oral products typically cause.
Compounding also enables us to use products for pain management that are not typically thought of as pain medications. Ketamine used alone or in combination with other drugs works wonderfully when applied topically. Dextromethorphan has also been used in combination with other drugs to aid in the control of pain.
